Manuel Gomes tried to retire, but couldn’t stand being out of work for long. “He’s the kind of guy who can’t sit at home and not do anything,” says his son Will. “So it was his idea to open a restaurant.” Together they bought Spice Grill in 2013. Under previous ownership, the restaurant had been failing, but it quickly turned around thanks to the Gomes’ hard work. “My dad likes to work hard," Will says. "If he’s not working, he doesn’t feel right. He worked his butt off to make Spice Grill successful.”
Manuel is from Pakistan and immigrated to Vancouver in 1976. He moved to Edmonton in 1984 and began working as a chef at local restaurants, including the prestigious Chateau Lacombe. He also managed a concession at the YMCA that gave him a taste of working for himself. “That’s where he discovered his drive, and knew we could definitely open this restaurant and make it work,” explains Will.
