When the rest of us are slumbering through the wee hours with the shrill alarm clock ring hours away, Aaron Doucet and Colleen Ramage, bright eyed and bushy tailed, are rummaging purposefully through heaps of clothing in one warehouse or another in Toronto.
They may have to wade through piles of clothing that look like they have seen better days and maybe even toss things aside that shouldn’t be there (“We found a banana skin once,” laughs Aaron), but in the end, they handpick the best pieces of vintage clothing they can get their hands on. These items end up in their store, Philistine. “It’s called ‘picking’ and we do it a couple of times a week,” explains Aaron. “All the vintage stores are there ready to bid on what’s there so it’s competitive, but there is such an abundance of clothing that there’s something for everyone. It’s always a gamble and it’s always fun.”
